The 16S rRNA gene is a highly conserved component of the transcriptional machinery of all DNA-based life forms and thus is highly suited as a target gene for sequencing DNA in complex biological samples. Recently, next-gen sequencing has been applied as a comprehensive method of identification, classification and quantitation of microbes within various sample types such as environmental samples (ex. soil ) and gut samples (ex. human gut microbiome).
This presentation will provide an overview of sample preservation and high quality DNA isolation methods from environmental samples such as soil and fecal samples as well as practical information for performing 16S rRNA sequencing experiments and data analysis. Diverse case study examples will be provided to illustrate the usefulness of this latest application of next-gen sequencing technology to microbiome analysis and environmental science.
Webinar Outline
- Brief review of 16S rRNA Sequencing: technical advantages, applications
- Recent developments of 16S sequencing in the fields of microbiome analysis & environmental science
- Current methods for sample preservation and extraction of various complex sample types
- Current methods for 16S Sequencing and data analysis
- Case studies and application examples
