microRNA

miRNAs regulate several metabolic process including: insulin secretion, lipid/glucose homeostasis, adipogenesis and osteoclastogenesis.
To better understand metabolic diseases, it is important to elucidate the molecular mechanisms governing these processes.

There is clinical potential for miRNA as biomarkers in metabolic disease

miRNAs regulate several metabolic pathways including insulin secretion and lipid/glucose homeostasis. Changes in the metabolic control of these pathways predispose an individual to develop cardiometabolic diseases, such as diabetes and atherosclerosis.

The potential of miRNAs as biomarkers for diagnosis and prognosis has became increasingly apparent, and due to their remarkable tissue specificity, they might even be more versatile markers of disease states than protein-coding mRNAs.

The invasive nature of tissue biopsies, such as from the liver in the case non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, makes diagnosis difficult. Studies aimed at identifying miRNA expression profiles from body fluids, such as serum or urine, that could serve as a novel diagnostic biomarkers of metabolic diseases have met with success recently.
